I chalk it up to learning from a young age to take care of my teeth and a little bit of luck too. So, my girls have always known that going to the dentist is really important. I love that it has been stressed in both of their preschool classes as well. We have always said that the dentist is a fun place.
Our regular dentist office is nice, but it also feels very “old-manish.” Yep, I like to make up my own words. So while my girls like the dentist they have never gotten super excited either. I was thrilled with the idea of a pediatric dentist. My 4-year-old has a very funny bite (she was a binky baby) and I’ve had some concerns about her alignment that our previous dentist didn’t really answer.
We were late for our appointment at Mountain View Pediatric Dentistry. We got a little lost, which was my fault because I didn’t check to see where it was located before we left and just trusted that the gps would get us there. Just a heads up, if you head to their Farmington location, it is tucked into the back of a office complex. Even though we were late, they were still super nice. My girls only had a few minutes to check out the fish before they got us right back for their appointments.
One of my girl’s favorite part (and mine to be honest) of our visit was getting X-rays. This was such an easy process and it is so quick and painless. Not like I remember it from when I was a kid. We loved the digital pictures that popped right up as they were getting their X-rays.
It was fascinating to see my 6 year olds X-rays. She hasn’t lost any teeth, but it looks like we are very close to her losing her top front teeth. Another fun milestone to look forward to!
After the X-rays came the cleaning. My little 4 year old was a little concerned about the cleaning. She doesn’t like funny tastes (she is super picky) and funny textures bother her as well. But they were great about talking her through everything they were doing and she was all smiles.
After the cleaning they got to pick out their new toothbrushes. And since this was their first visit they also got a timer, water bottle, floss, toothpaste, and a fun prize or two.
Dr Sam was amazing with both my girls. He “counted their teeth.” And talked to them about brushing twice a day. He even explained the X-rays to each of my girls, which I loved! I think it is really cool when adults explain things to children. Dr Sam talked to my children and not just to me. This was new and I really appreciated it. We try to use every experience as a learning opportunity for our children and it was so nice that Dr Sam does the same thing.
We’ve already made our appointments for their next visit in 6 months. I’m thrilled to have a pediatric dentist that my girls love and that gets my kids. Oh, and I mentioned my 4 year old and her weird little bite. Dr Sam noticed it right away and addressed all my concerns without me even having to bring it up. Loved it!
I am following Mountain View Pediatric Dentistry on Facebook for sure so that I can follow along with all their fun events. And I even downloaded their app. A dentist with an app! So cool.
I thought there was nothing better than a toothless grin from my little one; that is until one day that sweet smile was full of little teeth and that was pretty precious too! Get your child into a good oral hygiene routine by following these steps:
1. Brush twice a day- Begin “brushing” before your little one has teeth by using a soft brush or cloth to clean your baby’s gums. Once your baby gets teeth they are are risk for tooth decay, so brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste.
2. Regular Dentist Visits- AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) recommends a first visit between 6-12 months with regular check ups every 6 months.
3. Have sealants applied when appropriate- sealants “seal out” food and plaque, thus reducing the risk of tooth decay. Ask your dentist if sealants would be appropriate for your child.
4. Fluoride- In addition to using a fluoride toothpaste, check with your dentist to see if your child needs a fluoride supplement. In many areas fluoride is added to the community water supply. Your dentist will be able to determine if a fluoride supplement is appropriate.
5. Diet and snacking- Be sure your child is getting a balanced diet to support healthy teeth and and healthy gum tissue. Limit the number of snack times. Never put your child to bed with milk or juice.
For the sixth year, Mountain View Pediatric Dentistry will be holding our annual kids carnival on Friday June 6th from 5-8pm. Not only is this a great chance to get together and have fun, but a fundraiser during the carnival will be held to help a young man in need.
This year’s carnival will be fun for the whole family with door prizes, raffles, sno cones, cotton candy, popcorn, pony rides, a bounce house, photo booth, face painting, balloon animals, and a dunk tank where you can dunk your dentist! This is a great opportunity for your kids to get together, have fun, and interact with our staff on a different level. The event will take place in our Pleasant View office’s parking lot, located at 2719 N. Hwy 89. Come down early, the first 100 kids in line will receive a free t-shirt!
While our carnival is all about having fun, the fundraiser held during it takes a very serious tone. On February 17th of this year, Colton Berett woke up with no motor function in his neck and right arm. For him to make it to Insta-Care, he had to have his head held up and supported. He was then sent to Primary Children’s Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with Longitudinal Transverse Myelitis, a neurological disorder affecting the spinal cord. This inflammation left him with no motor function in his extremities, and a weakness in his muscles throughout his entire body.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Colton is positive and motivated to get stronger. He is regaining some of the strength he lost, and even has some movement in one hand. During this year’s carnival, a silent auction will be held to raise money for Colton’s medical needs. Come be a part of helping Colton continue to improve.
The Mountain View patient appreciation carnival is only 2 short days away. Come by for a great time, and to support a great cause. Your children will love the games and prizes this fun family night will bring!
