When you bring your child to the dentist, safety and comfort are your top priorities. To help make you child’s experience stress-free, we offer 4 types of sedation: nitrous oxide (laughing gas), conscious oral sedation, in-office IV sedation and general anesthesia at Mt. Ogden Surgical Center or Primary Children’s Medical Center.
How safe is Sedation in Dental Procedures for Children?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, dentists and oral surgeons must follow certain guidelines when providing sedation to children. Dentists must ensure the patient’s safety during the procedure. Blood oxygen level, blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate must be closely monitored. Once the patient wakes up after sedation, they may feel dizzy or confused. We recommend having two adults accompany the child on the drive home – one to drive and one to check on the child’s status.
Pediatric Sedation Options
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) – This sedation option allows children to breathe nitrous through a small mask that sits over their nose.
- Oral Sedation – This sedation method is administered to your child at our office. After a thorough review of their medical history and verifying their fasting status, your child will be given a small drink of oral sedatives.
- In office IV sedation – Our nurse either starts an IV on your child or gives a small injection, much like the injection given during an immunization, of a sedative.
- General Anesthesia performed at either Mountain Ogden Surgical Center or Primary Children’s Hospital.
