Are you amazed at the rate which you buy snack food? Has your child ever finished dinner and then asked you to open a package of fruit snacks? We get it. Kids love snack food and they like to eat it at all times of the day. Some of these snack foods however, can cause damage their teeth.
Although fun to eat, sticky foods like taffy, marshmallows, fruit snacks, dried fruit and gum cause big problems for teeth. These types of foods get caught in between teeth and are difficult to remove when brushing and flossing. If not properly removed, the tooth enamel will begin to decay from the breaking down of the food by acids. Sticky foods pose a threat to fillings and weak teeth of getting stuck in the food and being pulled out.
Solids aren’t the only dangerous things for teeth. Soda drinks have ingredients of high fructose corn syrup, citric acid and phosphoric acid that cause erosion of the enamel. Avoid frequently drinking overly sugary drinks like juices and even milk.
For your children to have healthy teeth and to avoid tooth decay, offer sticky and sugary foods sparingly. When you do, make sure your kids floss and brush afterward. Let us examine your kid’s teeth every six months to make sure they are clean, healthy and strong.
