Children often have a fear of going to the dentist because they are unsure of what to expect, or they have had a bad experience in the past. Some children suffer from dental anxiety, which can be a serious problem if it is not handled properly. At The Moose Dentist, we want your children to enjoy coming in for a visit. Whether they need a teeth cleaning or a cavity filled, it is our job to make sure this visit goes smoothly. Here are some ways we work with your kids to help reduce their fear of the dentist.
Start Young
We always recommend having children start visiting the dentist by their first birthday. Starting young is the best way to help kids become comfortable with dental procedures.
Keep it Simple
Another problem kids often have is not knowing what to expect. We find that the best way to prepare them for the dentist is by keeping it simple. If you disclose too many details, they can become weary of visiting our office. We suggest staying positive and avoid promising things you cannot deliver such as saying “it won’t hurt” or “you’ll be fine,” as it won’t seem fine to a child if they need a cavity filled.
Practice Makes Perfect
To help your child prepare for a visit to our office, we suggest some pretend play. Try taking turns with your kids playing the dentist and the patient. Pretend play makes it easier on children when they have their first visit to the dentist.
